Hi there, and welcome to Home Studio Mix Tips! I’m Bobby, the founder, and I want to give you the keys to the Ferrari – better sounding music coming out of your home studio, no matter the gear or your budget.
What I Do Here
Contrary to the name of the site, I cover more than just mix tips. I talk about mixing, recording, production, editing, mastering, gear hacks, and even a touch of studio philosophy. I have an incredible passion for making music sound great, and teaching others how they can do the same. The gatekeepers are gone, and all the tools are out there for you to crank out some amazing, iTunes and radio-ready music at an incredibly low cost of entry. The gear has never been more affordable.
Maybe you’re recording yourself singing along to an acoustic guitar in a dorm room. Maybe you’ve got a rock band in a box in an apartment. Maybe your drum room is a garage where you shove everything to one side just to make room for the drummer’s Neil Peart-esque kit, and all you’ve got are 4 microphones. You can still make great music. The gear isn’t the limitation: it’s all in how you use the tools you have. I want to help you make the most of what you’ve got, no matter your budget, recording space, mix setup, or style of music.
I focus primarily on what’s available to those with limited budgets. You don’t need a huge mixing console, a locker full of microphones, a rack full of outboard gear, a room full of amplifiers, or a perfectly tuned room. I promise you, you already have most, if not all, of the equipment you need to start making great mixes.
What Do You Need To Join In?
An open mind, the willingness to learn, and the discipline to put the information I’m sharing into practice. I can put out a million articles and just as many videos demonstrating and showing a myriad of concepts and practices, but it’s on you to take what I give you, and apply it.

My Story
Like many of you reading this, I’m a musician. I’m a guitarist first, a singer second, and a frustrated drummer third. I got my start playing guitar when I was 12, and around 16 decided to plug my guitar into the back of my computer with a ridiculous chain of connectors and adapters I bought from Radioshack, in an attempt to record some music into an old copy of Sony Acid we had laying around. Initially I used recording merely as a songwriting tool to document my ideas, but I very quickly fell down the rabbit hole.
Over time I began upgrading my gear, my software, and most importantly my brain. To this day, I still use a very modest affordable setup, pieced together in my bedroom (it’s really a recording studio with a bed in the corner).
I still write and record my own music, as well as recording and mixing for other musicians. You can check out my music and hear work I’ve done for others at http://www.bobbyphillipps.net/. I’m also the administrator and host of National Solo Album Month (NaSoAlMo.org), an annual songwriting challenge during the month of November.
I live in Cheyenne, WY with my two cats and too many guitars to be practical.
